Author & Journalist
I’m Dan, or Daniel F. McCarthy if you prefer to be formal about it, and I am an author and journalist living in the Hudson Valley.
I’ve read my short fiction and creative nonfiction at The Inner Loop reading series in Washington D.C. and the Renegade Reading Series in Brooklyn. I’m now seeking representation for my debut novel.
My journalistic work focuses on the transition away from fossil fuels. I’m the senior editor at Canary Media, a non-profit news outlet that covers solutions to climate change. Stories I’ve written or edited have been republished in outlets like Wired and Mother Jones and cited by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Los Angeles Times. In 2025, I was awarded the Transatlantic Media Fellowship from the Heinrich Boell Foundation to support my reporting on the transition away from coal in Greece.
I like to cook. I take modern Greek classes every Wednesday and am now proudly conversational, in the way a six-year-old who doesn’t pay much attention in school might be. I shoot photos — scroll down a bit and you can see some. I try to spend as much time in nature as I can, whether hiking or gardening at the home I share with my wife and two cats.
